Our Tawi-Tawi Adventure: A Personal Account

For my recent trip to Tawi-Tawi, I decided to join my Search & Rescue team, who also happen to be Security Consultants, for a much-needed vacation. Our journey from Manila began bright and early with a 4:05 AM Philippine Airlines flight, landing us in Zamboanga City at a cool 5:40 AM.

Zamboanga itself offered a delightful, albeit brief, stopover. We managed a quick tour around the city and even had the unique opportunity to have breakfast with Mayor Khymer Adan I. Olaso, savoring the local delicacy, Satti – a truly flavorful start to our day!

After breakfast, we took a taxi to Barter, a well-known spot for goods like clothes. However, being a Sunday, most shops were closed. We then found refuge and relaxed at Taza Cafe, waiting for our 11:30 AM Cebu Pacific flight from Zamboanga to Tawi-Tawi. It was a comfortable wait, anticipating the next leg of our adventure.

1. The Fastest Way: Fly via Zamboanga City

This is the most common and generally fastest route. Both Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific offer multiple daily flights from Manila to Zamboanga City.

  • Manila to Zamboanga Flight:

    • Airlines: Philippine Airlines and Cebu Pacific are your main choices.

    • Flight Duration: Approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes to 2 hours.

    • Considerations: Booking early often secures better fares. Check both airlines for schedules that best fit your itinerary.

  • Zamboanga City to Tawi-Tawi Flight:

    • Airlines: Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines operate flights from Zamboanga International Airport (ZAM) to Sanga-Sanga Airport (TWT) in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.

    • Flight Duration: A quick 55 minutes to 1 hour.

    • Frequency: Flights are generally available daily, but it's always best to check the latest schedules from the airlines directly.

Traveler's Tip: When booking, consider leaving ample layover time in Zamboanga, especially if you plan to do some sightseeing or want to account for any potential flight delays. Our experience shows that a few hours in between flights allows for a relaxed transition.

2. The Scenic (and Longer) Route: Ferry via Zamboanga City

For budget-conscious travelers or those who prefer a longer sea journey, taking a ferry from Zamboanga City to Bongao, Tawi-Tawi is an option.

  • From Manila to Zamboanga (by Ferry): While possible, this is a very long journey (often over 24 hours). If you opt for sea travel from Manila, consider flying to Zamboanga first and then taking the ferry to Tawi-Tawi.

    • Operator: Aleson Shipping Lines is the primary operator on this route.

    • Travel Time: Approximately 17-18 hours. This is an overnight journey.

    • Frequency: Typically, ferries run a few times a week (e.g., Monday, Wednesday, Friday departures from Zamboanga).

    • Fare: Fares vary depending on the accommodation class (Economy, Aircon, Cabin).

Considerations for Ferry Travel:

  • This option is significantly longer than flying.

  • Check the latest schedules and ticket prices directly with Aleson Shipping Lines.

  • Be prepared for a full day (or night) at sea.

3. Via Cotabato City (Limited Flights)

Philippine Airlines has resumed limited flights from Cotabato to Tawi-Tawi. This could be an alternative, but it's generally less frequent than the Zamboanga route.

  • Manila to Cotabato Flight:

  • Cotabato to Tawi-Tawi Flight:
