The Sacred Heart of Tawi-Tawi

Rising approximately 340 meters (1,115 feet) above sea level, Bud Bongao is the highest peak in Tawi-Tawi and a revered pilgrimage site for the local community. The name itself, "Bud Bongao," literally means "Bongao Mountain," with "Bud" being the Tausug term for mountain. For centuries, this lush mountain in Bongao town has held profound significance for the indigenous Sama Dilaut people and other communities in the province.

It's believed that two Islamic preachers, direct followers of Karim ul-Makhdum (who introduced Islam to the Philippines in 1380), are buried beneath the "Tampat Rocks" on the mountain. This makes Bud Bongao a holy site, drawing pilgrims who come to offer prayers and leave offerings, often tying prayer flags along the trail. Even before the arrival of Islam, the mountain was already considered sacred, an abode of spirits or "jinns" intimately connected to the lives of the people, the land, and the sea. This deep spiritual connection truly imbues Bud Bongao with a unique mystique.

A Walk Through History and Nature

The hike to the summit typically takes about 1 to 2 hours, and it's an experience in itself. You'll traverse a 3,608-step cobblestone trail that winds through one of the last remaining moist forests in the Sulu Archipelago. This 250-hectare forest, inaugurated as the Bongao Peak Eco-Tourism Park in 2017, is a haven for biodiversity. Keep your eyes peeled for the famous long-tailed macaques that are accustomed to human presence – bringing bananas for them is a popular interaction! You might also spot various bird species like the red dragonfly, orange albatross, and mangrove blue flycatcher. The mountain and surrounding islands are also home to vulnerable species like the Tawi-Tawi forest rat and the Philippine slow loris.

As you ascend, you'll pass by six limestone pillars that form its peaks, offering viewpoints named after the islands and locations they overlook, such as Bongao, Pajar, Sibutu (the summit), Simunul, Tambisan, and Tinondakan. The panoramic views from the top are simply breathtaking, showcasing the sprawling Bongao town, the turquoise waters of the Celebes Sea, and neighboring islands. It’s a truly rewarding sight after the trek, perfect for reflection and, of course, capturing some incredible photos.
