Nusa Penida – Most Beautiful Island in Bali, Indonesia

Updated: Mar 26, 2021

You’ve probably come across a beautiful photo of an island that looks like a dinosaur’s back and asked yourself, “Where is this place?”

When I saw that photo, I’ve thought the same, and when I found out it was in Kelingking Beach in Nusa Penida, I started doing my research on how to get there.

Before I dive right into the itinerary, here’s some information you need to know before you decide on making your way there.

Nusa Penida is a large island, you can explore it on a day trip, but you will not be able to enjoy all the different beaches the island has to offer. It is more advisable to go there and stay overnight so you are not pressured with time and get to relax on each beach.

My friend and I stayed in Seminyak, so we started our trip to Nusa Penida from there.

We decided to take the tour from our “private driver”, and he charged us 1M Indonesia Rupiah ($70.00) each, for the private car ride from our hotel in Seminyak, the boat ride, the private vehicle on the island, and the ride back from the harbor to Seminyak.

You can, of course, find a much cheaper way if you book all the transportation on your own (which I will explain below), but for comfort, it is easier to go through a tour company as they book everything for you. All you have to do is show up.

How to get to Nusa Penida

From your hotel in Bali, find out how long it takes you to get to Sanur Harbor.

Ideal time is to get there before 7:30AM, so you can take a fast ferry out early before it gets too hot.

There are many boats, so prior reservations are not necessarily required. You will need to book a roundtrip ticket to secure that you can go back to Bali in the afternoon (for day trippers). If you want to take your scooter with you to Nusa Penida, you will need to go to another harbor.

The boat ride is around 30minutes to the island, and once you get down from the boat, there are many options for scooter hire or private tour.

If you are not that experienced in scooters, I suggest you take a car because most of the way is dirt roads with huge potholes. It is also nice to be away from the sun for a little bit especially if you expect to spend most of the time on the beach.

The beaches you can visit include Diamond Beach, Kelinking Beach, Broken Beach, Angel’s Billabong, and Crystal Bay.
